Cytokinins in flowers and fruit of the Christmas rose
The sepals of fertilized Christmas rose (Helleborus niger L.) flowers turn green, spread, and persist until the seeds are ripe. These processes stop when the developing fruit are removed, but can be restored by applying cytokinins in lanolin, thus suggesting a role for endogenous cytokinins in the metamorphosis of fruit-bearing flowers. Indeed, HPLC analysis indicates a drastic increase of the levels of bioactive cytokinins (free bases and riboside), both in the sepals and in the fruit, shortly after fertilization. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry confirms the presence of trans-zeatin, isopentenyladenine and their ribosides, as major cytokinins.
