Urban Soundscape Design Factors at Historical Sites

Which specific urban factors of the histor- ical site influence the possibility to expe- rience its (designed) soundscape? While sonic environments are becoming recog- nised as an important component of her- itage sites, urban planning and design are being addressed as key disciplines influ- encing its quality. Therefore a systematic approach is needed. Several types of historical urban open spaces worldwide (urban parks, squares and block interiors characterised by de- signed soundscape elements) are analysed (in Milano, Paris, London, Dresden, Graz, Zadar, Zagreb, Sheffield, Solothurn, Oslo, Vancouver and Melbourne) in order to de- fine key urban factors. Designed soundscapes in analysed spac- es span from historical to contemporary ones. Principles of temporary and per- manent soundscape designs depend pri- marily on recognised urban factors. Ac- cordingly, methods of achieving designed soundscape span from electroacoustic multichannel soundscape systems to soundscape articulated through acoustic qualities of urban design elements such as pavement, vegetation, echo pavilion or carefully designed water fountain or even those which could be considered to be mu- sical instruments. Factors of typology, scale and assumed acoustical context are recognised as most significant for the analysed spaces. The historical context usually acts primarily as picturesque scenery. Analysed designs are rarely conceived solely to enhance urban soundscape. Designed soundscapes in- tertwine contemporary sound art, music, acoustics and urban design. They enrich the historical urban open spaces giving them a new layer which increases their cul- tural significance and complexity.
