Removal of Metal Ion Impurities from Calcium Sulphate Using Liquid Membranes
Liquid membrane (LM) extraction was applied for removal of Cd2+ ions, incorporated in calcium sulphate anhydrite (AH), during the process of transformation of AH into the stable calcium sulphate dihydrate (DH) in aqueous solution. The transformation process was found to be solution-mediated, involving the dissolution of AH and the crystal growth of DH. This is supported by a mathematical model which takes into account all relevant kinetic parameters of the processes involved. The extractant that transports Cd2+ selectively over Ca2+ ions, and the effective LM configuration were chosen. Using the bulk liquid membrane (BLM) configuration, with Alamine 304 (tridodecylamine) or Alamine 336 (trioctylamine) as extractants diluted in the membrane phase (kerosene), Cd2+ was successfully removed from the feed suspension and no cadmium was found incorporated in the stable phase (DH) formed.
