Imidazole Derivatives as Copper Corrosion Inhibitors
Different imidazole derivatives, proven to be ecologically exceptable, have shown good inhibiting properties for atmospheric and acidic (H2SO4 and HCl) copper corrosion. The aim of this work was to investigate the efficiency of three imidazole derivatives [ethyl-4-methyl-5-imidazolecarboxylate, 1-phenyl-4-methylimidazole and 4-methyl-1(4-methoxyphenyl) imidazole] as copper corrosion inhibitors in 3% sodium chloride solution. Copper corrosion, in the absence and in the presence of investigated imidazole derivatives, was analyzed by electrochemical methods (Tafel extrapolation, polarization resistance determination and cyclic voltammetry), at different temperatures as well as by weight loss measurements for different immersion periods. Free adsorption energies of investigated imidazole derivatives and activation energies for copper in 3% NaCl with and without the addition of imidazoles, have been calculated. Results of our work show that investigated imidazole derivatives have very good inhibiting properties for copper corrosion in near neutral chloride media.
