Physico-Chemical Database of Fibre-Forming Binary Polymer Systems

The morphology of textile fibres can be complex, involving crystallinity, molecular orientation and the grosser morphology determined by the physical conditions and mode of phase separation as the fibre is spun, from solution into a non-solvent. In order to understand the reliance of the final product on the spinning conditions, it is necessary to be aware of the nature and possible routes to phase separation. Polymer solubility can vary from total insolubility, through swelling to full solvation. The behaviour of polymer-solvent systems can be understood in terms of thermodynamics. The present work is a subsidiary contribution to our previous studies concerning polymer/solvent and polymer/polymer systems. The purpose is to facilitate modeling and understanding the phase behavior phenomena in the fibre-forming polymer systems. As it is known, there is an overall paucity of available information on the thermodynamic properties of polymer solutions, especially if one of the components is copolymer. The type of data for different polymer systems varies considerably in quality, quantity and in the nature of experimental information provided, what makes tabulation of data difficult. For that reason, a systematic study in analyzing all available experimental data in open literature and related details concerning solubility and phase behavior in binary polymer systems was done, and an electronic database was built up. The experimental data are accounted on the basis of individual segmental interaction parameters by applying the segmental interaction FV-UNIQUAC model1 . For each polymer system the database contains the following information’s: component codes or identification numbers, system type code (polymer/solvent, polymer/polymer) composition code of the constituent for the copolymers, composition of the polymer system, number of data points, data type code (solubility/insolubility behavior of the polymer system at a given temperature), and finally the data themselves. In addition, the relevant literature references are included. _____________________________ 1G.Bogdanić, J.Vidal, Fluid Phase Equilibria, 173 (2000) 241-252.
