Changing of Loyalities or ...? Nobility of Eastern Part of Sava and Drava Interamnium between Ferdinand of Habsburg, John Szapolyai and the Ottomans
After King Louis II of Hungary perished at the battlefield of Mohács, started the period marked by the struggles for the crown of the Kingdom of Hungary-Croatia and by increased Ottoman pressure. In such circumstances, particular noblemen supported for some time one and for some time another pretender on the throne, sometimes cooperated also with the Ottomans or even temporarily accepted Sultan’s rule. In the paper, I will follow the fate of certain members of the nobility of the eastern part of the Sava and Drava interamnium, in the first place that of the Despot Stephen Berislavić Grabarski, and try to determine factors influencing them to support in a certain moment one or another pretender and to shift loyalties from one to another, as well as factors which led to the collaboration with the Ottomans. The paper will also focus on the issue how these noblemen, whose individual and family history was marked by the anti-Ottoman fighting, which was an essential characteristic of their identity, coped with the collaboration with the Ottomans, where exactly lied their loyalty and what determined their identity.
