Study of hydrological relations between two adjacent karst springs by means of time series analysis

Karst springs with overlapping catchments are common in many karst areas throughout the world. The term “overlapping” implies the existence of a catchment area that gravitates temporarily or permanently to two or more karst springs. The mechanism of groundwater exchange between the karst systems of these springs is usually complex and time-variant, which can complicate significantly the estimation of groundwater balance and rainfall-runoff modeling. The fundamental property of two adjacent karst springs is that the lower one has a steadier flow than the upper one. Such spring pairs or groups have been written about extensively and have been called overflow and underflow springs. An interesting aspect of this study is that these two springs are several kilometers apart. The major contribution of the paper relies on the utilization of time series analysis of rainfall and spring discharges to characterize the functioning of two adjacent karst springs. Three aspects are discussed: (1) the origin of the quick-flow component of hydrographs (conduits under pressure or gravity flow), (2) the delineation of catchments (the common part of catchments), and (3) the hydrological relations between two karst springs. The study site is the catchment of the springs Jadro and Žrnovnica in Croatia. The Jadro Spring is located at the elevation of 35 m a.s.l. whereas the water from the Žrnovnica Spring emerges at different elevations, from 78 to 90 m a.s.l. The catchment is located in the Dinaric bare karst mainly formed of carbonate rocks and partly of impermeable flysch. Groundwater system is well developed, especially the central part of the catchment. There is no a reliable hydrological delineation of the catchment area. The analyzed data are: hourly rainfalls from four hydrometeorological stations, and hourly discharges from the springs Jadro and Žrnovnica. The available data refer to the four–year period from 2010 to 2013.
