Comparison of two methods for lactate concentration measurement during incremental treadmil execercise in dogs
In human sport medicine blood lactate analysis is performed routinely in practice as it serves as an indicator of training adaptation and helps evaluate optimal exercise intensity. Blood lactate concentration is also measured in veterinary practice in sport animals, mostly dogs and horses. In veterinary practice lactate concentration is measured in biochemical laboratories by comercial kits and by portable analysers. Portable lactate analyzer is more practical for its simple handling, inexpensivness and rapid obtaining of the results. The aim of this study was to compare two methods for measuring lactate concentration in dogs during treadmill exercise. There were 10 Border collies, mean age (±SD) 3.7 (± 1.9) years, participating in the study. Before the exercise on a treadmill, the intravenous catheter was placed in dogs’ v.cephalica antebrachii. Blood samples were taken six times from each dog: before, three times during, and after the incremental treadmill exercise. Lactate concentration was measured in duplicate, by Scout portable analyzer and the reference biochemical analyzer in laboratory, and the obtained values were compared. Student ´s t-test showed that Scout data was not significantly different from the laboratory data. High and positive correlation between lactate measured by the Scout analyzer and by labotatory analyzer was determined by Pearson’s Rank Order correlation (r=0, 95, p=0, 003). The Lactate Scout analyzer reveals a high degree of agreement with the laboratory method for lactate concentration and therefore can be valid for multiple measurements in the field during agility or other physical exercise.
