Modelling cracking in RC tensile members using an embedded-crack beam finite element
In this work we focus on the development of an embedded-crack beam/bar finite element in order to study the cracking mechanism occurring in RC members subjected to uniaxial tension. In the proposed formulation, the transversal crack is considered assuming a discontinuity in the displacement field. The crack initiation and growth are described using the principles of damage mechanics in conjunction with energy considerations originating from fracture mechanics. The crack is treated as cohesive, i.e. such that an amount of cohesion between the crack surfaces will continue to exist provided the crack opening is sufficiently narrow. This cohesion will be modelled using a damage law defined by the tensile concrete strength and fracture energy. The crack development predicted by this model is investigated for monotonically increasing loading and compared with numerical and experimental results.
