Olive Growing Suitability Assessment as a Tool for Development and Protection of Neglected Rural Areas

The most important role of rural landscape in everyday life is to be a living environment, so other roles such as natural ecosystem, natural resource and cultural heritage must be embedded. Thus, the main objective of this paper is to identify suitable areas for the development of olive growing as a base for protection of valuable rural landscapes. In order to determine the most suitable areas for olive growing, the multi- criteria analysis of the landscape potentials and qualities was used by overlaying the attractiveness and vulnerability models. Landscape attractiveness for development of olive growing was defined through (1) terrain attractiveness, (2) distance from waters for irrigation and (3) distance from transport infrastructure. Landscape vulnerability was defined through potential negative impacts of olive growing on landscape qualities such as: (1) natural, (2) visual and (3) cultural qualities, and (4) the qualities of natural resources. The final models of attractiveness and vulnerability were overlaid in order to obtain the final spatial model of landscape suitability for olive growing. The suitability model was then evaluated from three aspects: development, protective and compromise. The application of the multi-criteria analysis includes the harmonization of the demands of agricultural development with protective goals determined through existing and potential spatial qualities and contributes to the revitalization of increasingly neglected rural areas.
