Thelohanellus hovorkai (Myxosporea) in farmed common carp (Cyprinus carpio carpio): two cases from Croatia
Introduction Thelohanellus hovorkai Akhmerov, 1960 is a non-native myxosporean parasite that was originally described in Cyprinus carpio haematopterus in eastern Russia. Today it is widely distributed among European fish farms. Material and Methods This study describes two cases of thelohanellosis caused by T. hovorkai in farmed common carp in Croatia. Results Thelohanellus infection was found in a one-year-old common carp collected from a fish farm in Croatia, as well as in a two-year-old common carp imported from Slovenia. The infection was characterised by the presence of whitish plasmodia (2.3-2.9 mm) in mesenteries. The parasite was tentatively identified as T. hovorkai based on spore morphology and specific localisation of plasmodia. Conclusion Import of live common carp into Croatia will likely facilitate the further spread of this highly pathogenic Thelohanellus species.
