The identity of the community and the identity of the individual: the burial of the deceased within the settlement in the Middle Ages in Croatia
Burials within settlements represent an unusual funeral practice. In the area of Croatia there are exceptionally rare occurrences of such burial practice in the Early Middle Ages, a period in which the deceased were buried in cemeteries outside the settlements as a rule, and the buriale were organised in regular rows, as well as in the Late Middle Ages in which the deceased were buried in church graveyards. This paper discusses the possible motives of the early medieval community that led to this unusual practice of burial within settlements. The question is whether the burial took place during the period of the inhabitation of the settlement or, perhaps, after the life has moved to another position. In both cases, these are unusual burial practices wcich raise a series of questions about the identity of community and about the identity of the deceased himself.
