Method development for the determination of selenium in herbal supplements by hydride generation ETAAS
Selenium as essential nutrient is often present in herbal supplements which are widely consumed as food additives. Presence of multiple chemical forms of the element may bring significant analytical challenge to research in this area. Determination of selenium content at trace levels by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry is usually accomplished by use of matrix modifiers such as palladium, magnesium and nickel salts. Iridium-coated graphite tubes usually diminish the consumption of modifiers and also allow more efficient analysis of Se content. In this work the hydride generation ETAAS with in situ trapping on an iridium-coated graphite tube was used for Se analysis in variety of herbal supplement formulations such as pills, capsules and oils. Samples were digested with concentrated nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide using a closed vessel microwave system (UltraCLAVE, Milestone). The accuracy of the techniques was evaluated by using different certified reference materials.
