Throughput comparison of single- and dual-tray VLMs
VLMs are one important automated storage and retrieval systems due to growing application possibilities and constant demand for increasing picking productivity, space savings (high density storage), ergonomics and safety. Necessity for proper design of such warehousing systems requires calculation of system’s throughput, especially in high intense order- picking processes. Dual-tray VLMs provide additional benefit compared to the single-tray VLMs, with delivering next tote while order- picker is picking items from previously delivered tote. This way throughput could be increased, increasing productivity and efficiency of the picking process. This paper presents results of throughput comparison of single-tray and dual-tray VLMs for various configurations and picking times, providing insight what throughput could be expected with both types of VLMs and their differences. This information is valuable to warehouse designers and managers while making decision whether to invest in single-tray or dual-tray VLM.
