Owing Council, Advice and Aid: Slavonian Noblemen at the Court of King Louis I of Anjou (1342-1382)
The question of knighthood was well researched in Western historiography (with the work of Duby for France, Keen for England or Bumke for Germany), while this problematic was almost completely omitted from the research of both Hungarian and Croatian scholars. The paper revolves around the activity of the Slavonian nobility at the court of King Louis I of Hungary. These noblemen were styled in the Latin sources as aule parvulus for pages (Hung. udvári apród), aule iuvenis for young knight (Hung. udvári ifju) and full-grown, regular knights under simply aule miles (Hung. udvári lovág). It is also worth noting that in this period, contrary to later, period of Sigismund of Luxemburg, the terminology and social position are omitting the position or the title of familiares aule nostre. Furthermore, it will be seen if the royal court was a place to form bonds, which lead to alliances that may be discovered through marital strategies or social climb on the administrative level of county leadership. It will be discussed which families sent their sons to royal court, whether there are more examples from the aristocracy or mid-ranked and lesser nobility.
