CREATING VIVID PUBLIC PLACES THROUGH URBAN TRANSFORMATION Case Study NYC – Theory and Competition Project
Blocks, formed by streets, are one of the main urban morphologies. Since the streets constitute around one third of the urban public space, the main research question deals with creation of new public spaces that can generate socially active streets. This paper is about design project, which won the first prize in Community Programming category for one block in Brooklyn, New York. Here the public usages combine recreation and community space organized along streets, around the whole block and on the roof above publicly closed water retention facility. The main goal is to theoretically revise the project in the context of contemporary public space transformations in New York City. The purpose of this revision is to define differences between approaches to streetscapes and pedestrians in America and Europe. This paper gives an overview of new trends in urban life and strategies for the city mobility planning and evaluates the importance of competition method for the new public spaces on the example of Gowanus Water Works. Results show the significance of a thoughtful city planning and the benefits in a social and environmental aspect.
