Pottery Workshops in the Coastal Area of Roman Dalmatia: landscape, spatial organization, ownership
From the late Hellenistic period Dalmatia has intensively joined Mediterranean commerce not only as an importer of foreign pottery but also, thanks to its landscape characteristics, natural resources and regional economic developments, as a production subject.Production, commerce, exchange and consumption of goods have all widely inuenced the formation of a cultural landscape and the dynamics of economic and social processes. Depending on the richness of natural resources, communication infrastructure and market demands, local, regional and provincial pottery workshops began to develop. On the basis of the differentiation and/or specialization of their produce assortment and its quantities, along with the awareness and application of wider trends and fashions, it is possible to reconstruct the level of technological development of the various categories of workshops and follow the mobility of knowledge and skills of the various artisans or the workshop’s orientation to either regional or provincial markets.
