Both Cr(III) and V are micronutrients that play a role in the carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, but can be toxic at higher concentrations, especially in certain ionic forms. We studied the effects of chronic exposure to coal flying ash on Cr and V levels in blood/serum of power plant workers and the relationship with lipid and arbohydrate metabolism biomarkers (glucose-GLU, cholesterol-CHOL and triglycerides-TG). Levels of blood Cr (BCr) and blood V (BV) were ignificantly higher (p<0.0001) whereas serum Cr (SCr) and serum V (SV) were significantly lower (p<0.0001) in the power plant than in control workers. There were significant (p<0.0001) correlations between BCr and decrease of GLU/BCr ratio and between SCr and GLU/SCr. In the power plant workers, BV significantly correlated with a decrease of TG/BV and CHOL/BV (p<0.0001) while SV correlated with a decrease of CHOL/SV (p=0.005). The GLU/Cr, TG/V and CHOL/V ratios should be considered in the evaluation of disorders of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in occupationally exposed workers.
