On the Effects of Health Reach Pilot Training and Research Project in Croatia: Evaluation Design and Preliminary Results
Health Reach is part of "The Health of the Children in War Zones" project at McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada. It was applied as a pilot training and research program wih fifth grader elementary school pupils and teachers in Pakrac and Osijek. Trained teachers worked with their pupils two hours per week for five months (February to June 1996) studying issues related to trauma healing, conflict resolution, bias awareness and living in peace. Pre- and post- evaluation design with two comparable control groups was used to estimate the effects of the training. Instruments related to trauma exposure, posttraumatic stress reactions, interpersonal behavior, self-esteem, conflict resolution beliefs, attitudes and practices, ethnic distance, classroom psychosocial climate, and depression were administered for the first time to all groups before the training and again after it was completed. The first data analyses revealed that there were little or no pre- and post-intervention differences and suggests the weak or absent training impact.
