The benthic foraminifera Rectochrysalidina gusici n. gen., n. sp. (family Chrysalidinidae Neagu, 1968) from the Lower Campanian of Brač island, Croatia

The larger benthic foraminifera Rectochrysalidina gusici n. gen., n. sp. is described from the lower Campanian Pučišća Formation (GUŠIĆ & JELASKA, 1990 ; CVETKO TEŠOVIĆ et al., 2001) of the Island of Brač, Croatia. It represents one of the youngest Cretaceous representatives of the Chrysalidinidae emended herewith to include test becoming uniserial in the adult stage. One characteristic of the new taxon is represented also by its pseudo-keriothekal wall structure throughout the whole test. Praechrysalidina infracretacea might be considered the Lower Cretaceous ancestor of Rectochrysalidina gusici. Rectochrysalidina gusici has been recognized in packstones and poorly washed-out grainstones of the Pušišća formation containing a diverse association of benthic foraminifera. Besides, Fleuryana adriatica DE CASTRO, DROBNE & GUŠIĆ, 1994, and Reticulinella fleuryi CVETKO, GUŠIĆ & SCHROEDER, 1997, Rectochrysalidina gusici represents the third foraminifera described from the Upper Cretaceous of Brač Island. In addition, some of the foraminifera that occur in the same levels as R. gusici, are illustrated and shortly commented.
