The Interaction of li and Negation in Croatian Church Slavonic
The paper deals with the clitic li and its position vis-a-vis ne in Croatian Church Slavonic. The author discusses an unusual construction in which li either immediately follows initial ne or the constituent following that ne, giving rise to variants such as Ne li ti boiši se Boga... or Ne ti li boiši se Boga... (Do you not fear God (at all)...), which have a rhetorical rather than truly interrogative function. He then assumes that li is always in C and that this special rhetorical ne does not head a NegP, but rather is adjoined to CP. Consequently, li can either attach directly to ne or, if some other constituent is in the intervening (Spec, CP) position, li encliticizes to that constituent.
