Evaluation of the Journal Based on Bibliometric Indicators: Case Study of a Croatian Scientific Tourism Journal

As the quality of academic publications has been increasing lately, they can be ranked on the basis of the citation counts of the articles they publish or the quality perceptions of experts (Pechlaner, Zehrer & Abfalter, 2002). Production of scientific articles in the field of tourism has been growing significantly too (Ateljević & Peeters, 2008 ; Ateljević & Peeters, 2009 ; Baretje-Keller, 2012 ; Ateljević, 2014). Bibliometric analysis is an important and useful tool for the evaluation of the productivity of scientists and scientific institutions, but also for the evaluation of scientific publications. It is gaining importance because bibliometric indicators are increasingly used as a benchmark for the granting of financial resources to institutions, researchers, journals, etc. (Hall, 2010). This paper presents the citation analysis of the journal Turizam/Tourism based on data from three relevant databases - Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for the period 2000 – 2011. The aim of the paper is, on the example of the most important Croatian scientific tourism journal, to accentuate the (not)appropriateness of the uncritical application of evaluation criteria designed for Anglo-Saxon environment to the context of a small academic community that uses a different language and can count on a modest financial support from the ministry. Also, by the evaluation criteria the Croatian social scientific journals are required to be oriented towards international environments, and in the same time there are requirements for the transfer of the knowledge from the scientific environment to the context of economy. The paper also discusses the possible negative implications of the uncritical application of such criteria and funding policy on Croatian scientific publishing.
