Proton induced γ-ray emission cross-sections from Mg and F in the energy range from 1.9 – 3.0 MeV
Particle Induced Gamma-ray Emission (PIGE) is an ion beam analysis technique that uses energetic charged particles to interact with nuclei in the near surface regions of the sample (0 – 50 µm) to determine the composition and structure of solids by measuring characteristic prompt γ-rays. In this work we present differential cross-sections for γ-ray emission from the reactions 19F(p, p'γ)19F (Eγ = 110 and 197) and 25Mg(p, p'γ)25Mg (Eγ=390 and 585 keV). Differential cross-sections were measured for proton energies from 1.9 to 3 MeV with 15 keV step and beam energy resolution of 0.06%. Thin reference MgF2 standard with thickness of 54.1 µg/cm2 with additionally evaporated 4 nm Au layer for the normalization purposes was used as a target. The γ-rays were detected by a 20% relative efficiency HPGe detector placed at an angle of 135° with respect to the beam direction, while the backscattered protons were collected using silicon surface barrier detector placed at the scattering angle of 165°. Present results are compared with the previously measured experimental data available from the literature.
