Kuća 'house' as a conceptual and lexical category in the semantic space of specialist architecture discourse
This paper is theoretically based on the sociocognitive approach to specialist language (Temmerman 2000). It is a cognitive analysis of the Croatian lexeme kuća 'house' within the context of architecture, which generates specific ways of conceptualization and lexicalization that are markedly different to those in general language use. The analysis of this lexeme illustrates the underlying principles of a cognitive view of language, namely the role of a cognitive domain in the construction of meaning, the role of metaphor and metonymy in construal as well as the flexibility and dynamic nature of conceptual and lexical categories. This analysis, which is carried out on the specialized thematically homogeneous corpus of architecture texts in Croatian, confirms the feasibility of a contemporary cognitive methodological approach to specialist language analyses. In view of the absence of Croatian linguistic research on architecture specialist vocabulary, this paper is conceived as a contribution to its research from a contemporary sociocognitive approach to specialist language.
