The Image(s) of the City in South-Eastern and East-Central Europe in the Period between the Two World Wars - A Case Study of Zagreb
This article presents the images of Zagreb (spatium et homines) through the photographic lenses of prominent Croatian photographers Tošo Dabac and Đuro Janeković. The need to document reality characterized both photographers. Therefore, their photographs are a valuable source of urban social and cultural history in the manner of visual history, but they are masterpieces of the contemporary art photography as well. Their work, especially Dabac’s photographs, had an international success. The world-known Swiss photographer Peter Knapp, who organized the exhibition “L’oeil de Peter Knapp sur la photographie croate” in Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, has claimed that among others Dabac and Janeković’s work forms “the anthological personality of the Croatian photography”.
