Leadership and management styles in the context of strategic planning and financial decision making: attitudes of owners – managers of SMEs in Croatia

Based on the literature review, this article explore small and medium sized business owners and managers attitudes and opinions about their leadership and/or management style and behavior in the context of strategic planning. Managers and business owners primarily need entrepreneurial skills, and qualities of the leaders. Leadership and management styles and behavior of business owners and managers are required to ensure a high quality company performance and adequate strategic planning in the company. Today, business owners and managers need to have above average communication skills, knowledge how to work with people but also knowledge when making a strategic decisions (Kono, Barnes, 2010). This skills are especially important in SMEs. Understanding their employees, team functioning and team members decision making role is become crucial to anticipating business trends which is characterized by frequent changes in the market, growing global competition, rapid technological development together with demographic changes of employees (Požega et al., 2012). For determining how business owners and managers implemented the process of strategic planning in the company, it is important to explain differences and similarities between leadership and management style in the context of decision making process. Both consist of working with people and influence others, but management skills are mostly used for planning and organizing, they are task oriented while leadership skills are mostly used for aligning people, motivating and inspiring (Algahtani, 2014).
