Strategies for micro-grid operation in grid- connected mode

The micro-grid has been seen as a promising concept of an active distribution network for the reliable integration of distributed energy resources in the electricity system due to its controllability, flexibility and manageability. The defining characteristic of micro-grids is the ability to operate in islanded mode, but they are often integrated into larger grids and operate under grid connected condition. The objective of this work is to develop appropriate management strategies for grid- connected mode of micro-grid operation that can reduce overall operating cost and maximize profit. Therefore, a mathematical model of typical micro-grid compromising cogeneration plant, photovoltaic modules, thermal energy storage system, thermal loads and electrical loads has been developed. In order to meet local heat and electricity demand while simultaneously ensuring economical micro-grid operation, several strategies for the system operation have been proposed. Some of them are based on the use of optimization methods together with heuristics, while others are developed by applying exact optimization techniques. In order to validate and to compare the proposed strategies with respect to cost effectiveness, simulations of micro-grid operation during a winter week, summer week, and week in the transitional period were performed. The results indicate that the dispatch strategy with elements of the model based predictive approach can reduce the overall operating cost, especially during the summer and the transitional period.
