Characterization of additives in foundry industry
Additives as carriers of lustrous carbon in green sand mold mixtures are used in foundry industry as a coal dust substitute that is more environmentally friendly. Lustrous carbon is a microcrystalline carbon form, which evolves from a gaseous phase and its main purpose is a protection of casting surface against sand scorching and obtaining the required surface smoothness. In this paper, samples with different content of lustrous carbon were investigated by simultaneous thermal analysis differential thermal analysis/thermogravimetry (STA DTA/TG), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Analogy between methods of lustrous carbon determination in industry and by thermal analysis was discussed.
