Endemic taxa of the Genus Crocus L. (Iridaceae) in Croatia
In this research taxonomical, nomenclatural and chorological analysis of endemic taxa of the genus Crocus represented in the flora of Croatia was carried out, The aim of the work was to contribute to the knowledge about their diversity and possible endangered status. The investigation of the whole Genus Crocus in Croatia was based on literature data and performed by morphological analysis of living plants (at the field and in the Botanical Garden Zagreb) and herbarium material (ZA, ZAHO, LJU and WU herbaria). During the research a revision of the nomenclature of all taxa of the genus Crocus was carried out, with the outcome that the genus Crocus can be considered to be represented in Croatia by 11 taxa, out of which three species are endemic. These are subendemic species C. dalmaticus and C. thomasii and stenoendemic species C. malyi, known only from the Velebit Mountain. Their taxonomical positions, nomenclature, morphology and chorology (distribution maps of their findings produced by direct MTB mapping) will be presented and discussed. According to the IUCN standards endangered status was evaluated and compared for local and European levels, and protection measures were suggested.
