Influence of Imperfections on Mechanical Properties of Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Polymer Matrix Nanocomposites
Theoretical and experimental research of polymer and other composites, up to now, have shown that carbon nanotubes as a reinforcement significantly improve the mechanical properties of aforementioned composites [1, 2], thanks to its extremely high tensile strength and modulus of elasticity. However, the properties of carbon nanotubes are affected by different defects within nanotube structure, thus degrading the final mechanical properties of nanocomposites [3, 4]. Another reason of only slightly improvement of nanocomposite properties is the weak load transfer between matrix and the reinforcement [5], established only through weak van der Waals bonds. Proposed paper investigates a typical polymer nanocomposite reinforced with carbon nanotubes. Several different numerical examples are prepared, i.e. carbon nanotubes with various waviness ratio and type of defects are used as a reinforcement in a polymer matrix composite. Also, a special attention is devoted to proper modeling of van der Waals matrix-nanotube interactions, since those interactions have significant influence on the mechanical behavior of nanocomposite.
