Social Evaluation Process and Self-Esteem

Traditionally self-esteem has be been mainly conceptualised as a personal self-evaluation. Although in a number of empirical studies personal self-view is show to be profoundly influenced by other's thoughts, and how people believe they are perceived or evaluated by others, traditional conceptualisation of self-esteem make it difficult to explain these findings. Aims: Accordingly, one of the main aims of this study was to determine actual differences between persons with higher and lower levels of self-esteem in some aspects of social evaluation process. The other aim was to examine relative contribution of different social evaluation constructs in explaining self-esteem. Procedure: Participants were undergraduate students (N=281) who completed several paper-pencil format measures. These measures include Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965) as well as frequently used scales for assessment of certain aspects of social evaluation constructs, such as Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale (Leary, 1983), Concern for Appropriateness Scale (Lennox & Wolfe, 1984), etc. Results: Obtained results showed negative relationship between self-esteem trait and social evaluation process. In particular, those persons with lower self-esteem were generally more concerned with the process of social evaluation. Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrated that the patterns of differences between persons with lower and higer self-esteem can be identified. Also, the results suggest that construct of social evaluation plays an important role in understanding of self-esteem
