Gender-role attitudes, achievement motivation and power motivation in Slovenia and Croatia

In this study we first compare the motivations and gender role attitudes of college students in the two countries to see if they differ. Next, we examine the predictors of gender-role attitudes and motivations, using gender, country, and religion as independed varijables. Gender-role attitudes were measured by combination of two scales _ Attitudes Toward Women Scale (Spence and Helmreich 1972) and Macho Scale (Villemez and Touhey, 1977). Achievement motivation was assessed by the Spence and Helmreich scale (1972). The power motivation scale was constructed for this research, based on theoretical and empirical work by McClelland (1987). Differences were examined by comparing gender-role attitudes, achievement motivation and power motivation in Slovenia and Croatia, using samples of students at the Departments of Economics at University of Ljubljanja (Slovenia) n=389 and at University of Osijek (Croatia), n=148. Samples were similar in composition across countries accept for religion. There were more religious students in Croatia. There were no overall differences in motivation by country, but Croatians were more traditional in gender-role attitudes. There are some differences in explaning the attitude scale by gender, religion and father's education. Religion was found to predict achievement motivation only in Croatia and power motivation only in Slovenia. Father's education was also found to predict power motivation only in Slovenia.
