Effect of the Spacer Carbon Numbers on the Adsorption and Association of Dissymmetric Gemini Surfactants
A novel series of dissymmetric bisquarternary ammonium surfactants with a general formula C12H25(CH3)2N(CH2)sN(CH3)2C14H29Br2 (12-s-14), where s = 2, 6, 10 has been synthetised and characterised by FTIR, NMR and electrospray mass spectroscopy. Effect of the carbon number of the alkanediyl spacer on the adsorption and association in aqueous solution were studied by surface tension, conductometry, potentiometry, viscometry, dynamic light scattering and cryo-TEM. Surface and association properties show a behavior closely related to that of their symmetric counterparts. The length of the spacer chains, as well as the attractive and repulsive interactions of the surfactant molecules play an important role in determining the equilibrium area per molecule affecting both, the adsorption at the air/solution interface and morphology of aggregates formed in solution.
