Vegetable Production and Research Works in Croatia
By the estimation of Agricultural Advisory Service, vegetables for fresh market are produced at about 23, 300 ha in Croatia. The abundant yearly production is that of fruit vegetables (131, 000 t), cabbages (130, 000 t), and lettuce (70, 000 t). Vegetables for processing are grown on 1, 000 ha with yearly production of about 31, 000 t. In greenhouses (430 ha) production of different vegetables is 55, 000 t per year. The scientific researches on vegetable crops with the aim of introducing their results in vegetable production mostly are carried out at four scientific institutions: Agricultural Faculty of University of Zagreb, Agricultural Faculty of University of Osijek, Institute for Adriatic Crops and Karst Reclamation in Split and Institute of Agriculture and Tourism in Poreč. The research works on vegetable crops and related scientific fields, with the aim to improve vegetable production, specially have been increased in the last twenty years. Firstly, that is the result of increased number of researchers in relation to previous period – at above-mentioned institutions 11 PhD- researches are employed. Secondly, the research works on many applied and developmental projects, mostly funded by Ministry of Science, Education and Sports, and Ministry of Agriculture, have been carried out in the same period. Besides of publishing scientific papers, the significance of research projects is in application of research results and determination of trends in development of vegetable production.
