Sexual partner satisfaction - mitigating factor in the sexual functioning of women with psychological problems

Objective A broader spectrum of factors influences sexual satisfaction and function in women, compared to men. Women with mental disorders have higher prevalence of sexual dysfunctions. The aim of our study was to examine the relationship of various quality of life aspects with sexual partner satisfaction and sexual functioning in women diagnosed with depression and alcohol dependence. Methods Participants were collected in three different day hospitals in two Croatian towns. The sample consists of 80 women treated for depression and alcohol dependence, aged 51 (range 25 to 63). Sexual functioning was assessed with a Brief profile of female sexual function questionnaire (seven questions, scaled 1-6). This instrument assesses different sexual response cycle aspects. Quality of life was measured with a Quality of Life Scale (21 items on subjective satisfaction with different aspects of life quality in 15 domains). Results Women with depression and alcohol dependence report significant sexual problems. These women show the highest satisfaction with their religion and children, and are the least satisfied with their health. They also report dissatisfaction with the idea of continuing their life in the same vein. The frequency of sexual problems is in positive correlation with age, and some specific aspects of quality of life. Patients diagnosed with depression have a higher incidence of sexual difficulties compared to patients diagnosed with alcohol dependency. Patients with either psychological disorder are more satisfied with their quality of life and report fewer sexual dysfunction issues if they are satisfied with their sexual partner. Conclusion The results of this study indicate the importance of understanding the role of a sexual partner in the context of quality of life satisfaction, and in the sexual functioning of women with psychological problems.
