Leaching Behaviour of Iron-Modified Zeolite Loaded with Heavy Metals
Discharged industrial wastewaters and leachates of municipal landfill which contain heavy metals can pollute the environment and have toxic influence on ecosystems and human beings. Different techniques of soil and groundwater remediation have been developed, while recently, the interest of scientists has been focused on investigation of natural materials which can be efficiently used as materials for remediation. Zeolites are well known natural materials which can be used for this purpose, to remediate the environment polluted with cationic, anionic and organic molecules. This paper investigates the leaching behaviour of metal loaded iron-modified zeolite (IMZ). After loading with copper and lead, the leaching behaviour has been investigated in ultrapure water by adjusting pH values in the range from 3.00 to 9.04. IMZ has shown excellent buffer properties at investigated pH values. At pH>3, the elution of copper and lead from IMZ has not taken place. This means that IMZ retains copper and lead and can be used for remediation of the environment. At pH=3, the elution of copper and lead is observed, and further experiments should be focused on the investigation of leaching in strongly acidic mediums.
