Removal of Cd(II) and Zn(II) from binary aqueous solutions onto natural zeolite by the column process
The uptake of cadmium and zinc ions from binary aqueous solutions with different Cd/Zn concentration ratios onto the fixed bed of natural zeolite clinoptilolite has been examined. Up to the breakthrough point, Cd and Zn ions bind simultaneously. After breakthrough, the complete overlapping in the total (Cd+Zn) concentration has been observed for Cd/Zn ratios of 0.14 and 1.07, while for Cd/Zn = 1.93 overshooting has been achieved. Although Cd and Zn have similar values of the hydrated ionic radius, electronegativity and energy of hydration, the displacement effect has taken place. The monitoring of pH values enables fast and reliable indication of the breakthrough point and the end of regeneration.
