Mapping of CO2 Storage Achievements Across Europe
A comprehensive mapping of CO2 storage research, development and demonstration activities in 28 European countries was performed within the CGS Europe project - the "Pan-European co-ordination action on CO2 geological storage". The results provide a unique overview of the current situation across Europe, a set of information that has not been available so far. Individual aspects of the mapping included, e.g., number and size of research institutions involved in CO2 storage research, existence of national funding for R&D, presence of research, pilot or demonstration sites, both operating and under preparation, and the status of relevant national legislation. The activities in individual countries were assessed in a semi-quantitative way, which resulted in division of the countries into four groups according to each country’s overall state of CO2 storage achievements. Finally, the CO2 storage achievement scores of individual countries were compared with their annual CO2 emissions. The results clearly illustrate the existing activity and knowledge gap between the “forerunner” and “follower” countries, which needs to be closed if the expected significant contribution of the CCS technology to the decarbonisation of the European economy in the next few decades is to be achieved.
