Pattern of diaphragm activation in kinesiology students
Good spine stability is particularly important when it is strained during physical activity. Without proper spine stabilization, muscle contraction of the extremities, transfers forces proximally and causes spinal movements which put increased stress on the structure of the spine and the surrounding connective tissue. An increased intra-abdominal pressure (IAP), produced by proper diaphragmatic breathing, in the enclosed abdominal cavity contributes to improving the stability of the spine. The aim of this study was determined the validation parameters of the Diaphragm Test (Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization) and the pattern of diaphragm activation in students of Faculty of Kinesiology University of Split. The study was conducted on a sample of 121 examinees aged 20 to 22. The assessment of their pattern of diaphragm activation was conducted by three trained judges. The ICC has been considered an acceptable level using it in assessing rater reliability of the Diaphragm Test. Correct diaphragm pattern was measured on scale from zero to maximal six points. The students are reached an average of 3 points at the scale of 6 points in assessment of their proper diaphragm pattern.
