FRICTION STIR WELDING OF 1, 5 MM THIN SHEETS OF EN AW 6063-T4 ALUMINIUM ALLOY USING TOOL WITH SIMPLIFIED GEOMETRY
Friction stir welding tool is defined by shoulder geometry, shoulder features (such as scrolls or grooves), probe geometry and probe features (such as threads, flutes, and flats). Tool shoulder is designed to frictionally heat the surface of the workpiece, produce the downward forging action necessary for welding consolidation and constrain the heated metal beneath the bottom shoulder surface. The tool pin profile is the primary cause of the mixing of the softened material that forms a weld. The idea of this experiment was to create a tool with simplified geometry that would mix the material only with sticking on the shoulder and sliding in the extrusion zone. The tool with calotte shoulder and free of any features was used for welding of 1, 5 mm thin sheets of aluminium alloy EN AW 6063-T4 in butt joint configuration. From the obtained welds the specimens for tensile testing and 3 point bend testing were prepared. The experiment results confirm that specific tool design can produce welds with acceptable mechanical properties and homogeneous microstructure.
