Sorption properties of nanocomposite precursor polyacrylic fibers
The carbon fibers (CFs) have wide application of which usage in medicine, and manufacturing of the polymer-carbon composites, are perhaps the most important. The aimed CFs properties, such as for bone tissue regeneration, antibacterial or magnetic properties, can be achieved by nanoadditives incorporation in the properly designed and controlled manufacturing processes of precursor fiber. The common precursor for CFs production are polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers. Since the porous structure formation and higher sorption properties are important for the final carbon fiber absorption of body fluids, in this paper the sorption properties of nanocomposite precursor polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers was researched. For that purpose PAN fibers were produced by the wet spinning method from the MavilonTM (Zoltek Company) copolymer of 93–94 wt% acrylonitrile units ; 5–6 wt% methyl acrylate and about 1 % alkyl sulfonate. 3 wt% of nanopowders of bioglass, CaO/ SiO2/P2O5 (54/40/6) and hydroxyapatite, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, (HAp) obtained at AGH Krakow were introduced at the stage of preparing the spinning solution. Sorption properties were determined through equilibrium moisture content (ASTM D2654-89a:1990) ; Water Retention Value (DIN 53814:1961). The swelling was monitored during electrokinetic potential (zeta, ZP) measurement by the streaming potential method using the SurPASS electrokinetic analyzer (Anton Paar GmbH, Austria) and compared to unmodified PAN fibers. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy images (SEM JSM 5400) were taken. The result showed slightly improved moisture sorption of PAN modified fibers. However, considering the results of water retention, which includes adsorption of non-ionic surfactant, it significantly increased with nanoadditives. For these fibers the decrease in the ZP was observed probably as a result of fiber swelling what leads to a transfer of the electrochemical double layer into the solid and, therefore, of the shear plane into the electrolyte solution. Considering SEM images, it is evident porous structure formation which results in additional surface area for sorption.
