Relation between water - soluble and total Ca content and bitter pit occurence in 'Idared'
Concentrations of total water-soluble Ca were investigated in apple (Malus x domestica Borkh.) sound fruits and those with symptoms of bitter pit at four locations and two rootstocks. In all locations there were signifficant differences in the concentrations of total and and water-soluble Ca. On the other hand, the differences in total water-insoluble Ca were significant at two locations only. The difference in the concentration of water-soluble Ca fraction was highly significant in all locations (P 0.01). Water-soluble Ca content was highly correlated with total Ca and may have great impact on bitter pit development.
