Counting Sheep and Then Some: A Multifactorial Look at Instantiations of Animal Metaphor
The paper tests the scope of applicability of Multiple Correspondence Analysis as a a method of Multifactorial Analysis (Glynn 2009) to the study of figurative language by focusing on specific instantiations of animal metaphor in English, viz. denominal animal verbs (dog(v.) and bitch (v.)). Instantiations of uses of these verbs are coded for a number of formal and semantic features and than subjected to Multiple Correspondence Analysis to study the degree to which the method is able to capture the interplay of various factors suggested to motivate their semantic and syntactic behaviour.
animal metaphor, denominal animal verbs, Multiple Correspondence Analysis, conceptual metaphor, conceptual metonymy
