Geomagnetic Information Risk Revisited: a case study of Croatia
Geomagnetic information, as found on topographic and navigational maps, comprises of the declination and its annual variation. Geomagnetic information (GI) is frequently obtained from (1) publicly available global geomagnetic models, e.g. IGRF-12, or (2) a model tailored at national or regional scales, e.g. GI2009.5 in Croatia. We will inquire two risk scenarios of where and when abovementioned GI representations do not match reality, contributing to heading errors. In case of Croatia, GI risk matrix when heading error >= 0.5 deg. proclaims risks at least low to moderate. A new, GI2015 model, proposed as a temporarily solution for 2015-2020, combines spatial accuracy of GI2009.5 with temporal reliability of IGRF-12. Comparison of all the models to Lonjsko polje observatory demonstrated their small deviations in 2014 and 2015. Besides avoiding misuse of GI, the study stressed the importance of continuously monitoring geomagnetic observatory(ies), and periodic as well as more detailed geomagnetic network surveys.
