The impact of nutrition on urinary iodide conencentration in Croatian pregnant women.
Pregnancy is affected with a great number of hormonal and metabolic changes that mainly involve the hormonal system of mother. Regarding the metabolism of the thyroid, these changes in pregnant women include an increase in serum concentrations of thriiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), and thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG). In pregnancy, as a result of increased maternal glomerular filtration rate, that leads to an increased renal clearance of iodine, as well as transfer of iodids and iodothyronines from mother to fetus, there is a reduction in level of inorganic iodide in serum of pregnant women. Women who live in areas with marginal iodine intake (<50mg per day) consequently may experience absolute or relative iodine deficiency accompanied by a compensatory increase in the size of thyroid gland or goiter.
