Population Dynamics, Dietary Habits and Lifestyle Changes in the Eastern Adriatic: A Review

A general shift in dietary habits and lifestyle practices has been observed in Croatia and such relatively abrupt changes have had an especially significant impact on the Eastern Adriatic islands. Croatian insular populations, known for their traditional Mediterranean diet, currently fit within the global trend of transition, globalisation and urbanisation, characterized by an increased intake of high- energy products, decreased level of physical activity and emigration from rural into urban areas. This negative trend is also associated with the development of pathogenic conditions and complex diseases, such as metabolic syndrome, obesity, diabetes mellitus and hypertension, conditions which represent a major public health problem nowadays.
