Modelling of the high frequencies transformers’ behaviour
Nikola Tesla, among many other inventions, invented and patented the electrical transformer in November 1897. That was a crucial discovery for the power system as we know it today. It allows transmission of electrical energy over long distance by the wire without significant losses. For the high voltage level in transmission the current becomes lower as well as losses in transmission. However, the transformer technology is more advanced today with respect to 100 years ago, but the principle of the electrical transformer stayed as it has been described in Tesla’s patent. It is the proof that Tesla was a brilliant inventor ahead of his time. My research is based on the modelling of the high frequencies transformers’ behaviour. Lightning strikes or other switching operations at the high frequencies in the power system can cause overvoltage. The electric apparatus have to be protected against such phenomena, therefore today we use electric transient simulation programmes (EMTP). For the confident modelling of the transformers’ behaviour by using the computer tools, the special high frequency transformer models have to be applied in addition.
