Simulations of membrane failure using combined finite and discrete element method

Membranes are widely used in architecture, in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and for modeling mechanical properties of certain tissues of living beings. Nonlinear mechanical behavior of membrane constructions is difficult to model using conventional finite element method. Introducing more challenging problems such as membrane wrinkling as loss of stability and tearing in areas exceeding tension strength, the modeling becomes even more difficult. In this work we present a robust numerical model for simulating transient behavior of arbitrary shape membranes including pre-failure and post-failure phase. The obtained model is based on the adaptation of previously developed methodology by Munjiza. Model uses explicit numerical integration scheme where nodal forces present interface between elements. In that way the calculation is done node by node and therefore no stiffness matrix is needed. Deformation of elements is calculated by using standard finite element method. In order to simplify interaction processes and mesh generation we used triangular elements. Between adjacent elements, a contact element is automatically generated at start. Contact elements introduce material nonlinearities and handle splitting of adjacent elements due to cracks. The model is then validated using data from analytical models and experiments.
