Fabrication and performance of in-situ carbon steel bar reinforced Al-alloy foams
This paper presents results of an experimental study on the processing and mechanical characterisation of plain and in-situ carbon-steel bar reinforced Al-alloy foams prepared by powder metallurgy method. Key technical manufacturing issues are discussed, namely the integration of the reinforcement (carbon steel bar) into the foams during the foaming step and the preparation of the in-situ reinforced foams with longer lengths. The quasi-static and dynamic uniaxial compressive and quasi-static three-point bending crushing performance of in-situ carbon steel bar reinforced aluminium alloy specimens was studied, exploring their deformation and failure mechanisms. The results indicate the potential of reinforced materials. The carbon-steel bar increases the compressive behaviour of the foams, but does not significantly influence their bending behaviour, in terms of peak load. However, the stress-strain curves under bending loads are shifted along the displacement axis in comparison to the plain foams. The deformation and failure mode of both specimens is similar under compressive and bending loads.
