WP2 : The level and hidrogeological fate of some POPs in several Croatian, Bosnian and Herzegovina and Kosovo areas as a consequence of war damages

During Balkan wars (Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina) and operation "Allied Force" in the spring of 1999, the burning or damaging of industrial and military targets in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia, resulted in the release of a large number of chemicals into the environment. There are great fears and concrete evidence these significant quantities of polychlorinated bifenyls (PCB) ; various flame-retardants, explosives, and their by-products were released in the environment during warfare. For obtaining relevant data about these ecological damages inside WP 2 will be performed next investigations: 1. Collection of data about entering POPs in Dalmatian, Bosnian and Kosovo area , attacked during the last war. Hazard identification will be performed partly in co-operation with local authorities and partly by interview with responsible persons in most present relevant industrial objects and facilities. 2. Collection of soil and other solid samples and collection atmospheric samples. In connection to evaluation soil and atmospheric pollution of the investigated area, collection stations will be established on areas on which there are proved or at least suspicion about serious PCB pollution. Especially diligent attention will be paid to vulnerable karstic areas and all places where E.T.S. or other industrial objects were destroyed. On the suspicious places contaminated with PCBs and other POPs, collection of soil and other solid samples will be performed and send to other laboratories involved in the Project for chemical analysis. 3. Hydrogeological field investigations and hazard mapping. On Zadar area Detailed hydrogeological mapping of approximately 20 km2 area, scale 1:5 000 will be performed- Remote sensing analysis of geological, morphological, structural, vegetation and urbanised Characteristics of studied area (satellite imagines processes and interpretation). Preparation and interpretation of hydrogeological and hazard map, structuring the data. Digitalisation and preparation of the hydrogeological map on the basis of the GIS (Geographic Information System) and relevant data bank will be prepared.
